This simple advice will help motorists, tram users and others to remain safe when using or when near the Supertram system...;

Passengers

Be aware when standing that you do not lose your balance as the tram accelerates or brakes.  Use the hand rails provided.

Wheelchair users should always use the area provided and apply the brake.  Ideally, travelling with the back of the chair against the partition and facing the rear of the tram provides the best option and acts to counter the force of sudden tram braking in emergency.

If you are waiting on the platform please keep away from the edge as the tram arrives.  Please also remember that the doors open outward slightly and that passengers may need to alight before you can board.

Pedestrians

When crossing the tram tracks use the designated crossing if possible.

In pedestrian areas be particularly vigilant as trams are very quiet.

Always stand clear of the tram’s "swept path" (the area in which it needs to move) so that it can pass safely by.

Motorists

A tram is 35 metres in length which means extra care needs to be taken in the unlikely event of having to overtake one.

Pay particular attention to the swing of the rear of the tram when it negotiates bends.  Allow a sufficient distance to the track when waiting at road junctions and leave adequate clearance when in an adjacent traffic lane.

The tram is unable to steer around obstructions.  When using parking bays please ensure that your vehicle is well out of the trams “swept path".  If you are parking on street please make sure that your vehicle does not obstruct the path of the tram, at least 2 metres is needed to allow the tram to pass at normal operational speed.

Driving in wet or icy weather requires extra caution around the tram tracks, whenever possible avoid driving directly on the rails.

Observe the road signs that warn of hazards along the tram route.

Please be considerate to cyclists who may have to move in to the centre of the road to avoid obstructions.

Motorcyclists and Cyclists

As with all vehicles, please take extra care around the tram tracks in wet or icy weather.

Cross the tracks at a wide angle.

Make sure other road users are aware of your intentions when moving out from the side of the road

Be aware that there are many places that a tram cannot pass a cyclist safely and would never try.  A cyclist may need to move away from the tram in order to let the tram by.

Stop, look and listen! – children be aware that...;

Supertram runs on electricity and is, therefore, very quiet, it doesn’t make the same noise as say a bus or a lorry.  If a Supertram driver sees you he/she will sound the bell or horn to warn you that the tram is coming but you can help by noting these points..

NEVER run across the tram tracks without first stopping to make sure no trams are coming.  Try to always use pedestrian crossings.

NEVER come out from behind a parked car to cross the tram tracks.

DON’T ride your bike near the tram tracks, if you have to cross the tracks with your bike take care that your bike wheels don’t stick in the grooves.

ALWAYS make sure that you can see Supertram and that the driver can see you.
